At the end of a humid April night
When the rain held off long enough to stoke a flame
The embers were left to burn themselves out
As laughter faded from the backyard into the house.
We run on empty often as humans,
always pushing forward because we feel we must.
Retrospectively, pushing toward self gain
more so leads to loss of self
